The Story
When I started dating my bf, I naturally checked out his socials… IG, Fb, etc. Idk what I was thinking I’d find… but of course I found pix of him with his exes and it broke my heart. (It sounds crazy I know lol).
But I couldn’t help but feel sad and a little jealous… jealous that they saw new places together before we did; jealous that they got to hear him say “I love you” before I got to hear it. And if he loved them, how could he also really love me too, right?
All of my insecurities started pouring out of me. Was she prettier than me? Was she cooler than me? If he fell out of love with her, statistically-speaking, that’s going to happen to me too.
I obviously wasn’t going to tell him all of this, so naturally I turned to writing. I started writing this a couple years ago and now when I look back, although sometimes I feel that awful jealous feeling creep up, for the most part that’s been healed.
Time helps of course. But also writing out exactly what is going on in my head helps me see it, acknowledge it and find compassion for myself. Of course I was feeling jealous! Who doesn’t ever experience jealousy?
✎ How It Was Written & Recorded ♬
I was gifted my best friend’s childhood upright and it’s my favorite piano! It’s warm, emotional and so enjoyable to play 😌. I sat down at the piano and wrote the bulk of it right there! Over the next few months I came back to it over and over, listening with fresh ears, and polished it up, changing a note or lyric here and there.
Then I started producing it out on my own. I got it to a certain point, then brought it to my producer, Jordan Sherman, who took it the rest of the way.
We recorded vocals in his home studio, tracked additional piano and programmed the drums. We added some fun synths and other sneaky sounds you’d have to listen super closely to pick out!
Then we mixed it as far as we could, leveling out certain sounds so that one instrument wasn’t blaring while the other was too quiet.
Our last stop was to take it to Jaime Estalella, who mixed it further and mastered it, bringing a perfect balance to the song.
Voice Notes
These are imperfect voice recordings of “Beaches With Victoria” as it was being written. Originally I called it “Mine For Now” and that’s what you’ll see as the titles of the below voice notes. While I’m writing, I’m always recording on my phone to capture special moments.
I messed around with melodies, lyrics, timing, rhythm, everything… I title my voice notes something that helps me keep track of what specifically to pay attention to when listening back! Check it out:
